Ladies Win Jnr Football Munster Final!

On Thursday 5th of February, the Junior Munster Ladies Football Final between Scoil Pol (Limerick) and Gaelcoláiste Mhuire (Cork) took place in Charleville. Little over a week since their Scoil Pol Footballdisappointing loss in the senior ladies final, the girls of Scoil Pol bounced back with an impressive performance against a skilful and resilient Cork side.

Despite the terrible weather endured over the past number of weeks the excellently maintained pitch at Charleville allowed both teams to play a skilful and high tempo brand of football. It was Scoil Pol who, aided with the wind, started much brighter with four unanswered points. Despite the constant pressure, Gaelcoláiste’s defence worked tirelessly in closing down space and tackling, providing limited scoring chances to the Scoil Pol forwards.

With ten minutes remaining in the first half, only a point separated the teams after a brilliant taken goal by Gaelcoláiste’s full forward Amy Ní Chongaile.

The final ten minutes of the half saw the Scoil Pol forwards dominate, with captain Shannon Ahern adding a goal and a point to bring her total to 1-3 before the break. A further goal was added by midfielder Marguerite Frewen, with further points from Mary Ellen Lyons and Leah O’ Sullivan leaving the half time score at 2-7 to 1-0.

With the wind at their backs the Gaelcoláiste’s girls were looking for a quick start to reduce the deficit. However an excellently taken goal by Scoil Pol’s corner forward Leah O’ Sullivan dampened the Cork sides comeback hopes. Despite the setback, the Cork outfit continued to pressurise and were rewarded with a ten minute spell in which they scored 1-4 without reply. With time running out and Scoil Pol determined to make amends for the previous week’s disappointment, wing forward Ellen Hyland steadied the nerves of the Limerick side and their supporters with a well taken point. The final score ended 3-8 to 2-4.

The mixture of sheer delight from the girls of Scoil Pol and sheer disappointment from the girls of the Gaelcoláiste perfectly captured the intensity with which both sides played. Scoil Pol captain Shannon Ahern accepted the trophy on behalf of her teammates and expressed her thanks to their management team of Mr. Dan Somers, Mr. Eoin Walsh and Ms. Sinead Duggan. She also wished Gaelcoláiste well in their upcoming county campaign. Player of the match was rewarded to Gaelcoláiste’s full forward Amy Ní Chongaile who finished with 2-3 of her sides total. The guard of honour reception awaiting the girls of Scoil Pol on their return to the school reinforced what the victory meant, not just for the girls, but for the whole school community.
